Check specifics with the right professional

Some decorating questions depend on your building and need specialist input. In particular:

• Asbestos: textured ceiling and wall coatings applied before 2000 may contain asbestos. Do not sand, scrape or drill them until they have been tested by a qualified asbestos surveyor.
• Lead paint: older paintwork, particularly in homes built before the 1970s, may contain lead. Follow Health and Safety Executive guidance and do not dry-sand or burn off old paint.
• Damp, cracks and structural issues: a builder or surveyor should assess persistent damp, widening cracks and failed render before decorating.
• Conservation areas and listed buildings: changing exterior colours or painting surfaces that are currently unpainted may need permission. Check with Ealing Council before starting.

Where the guides mention drying times, coverage or suitable products, these are typical figures. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin or product data sheet. The paint calculator gives an estimate of quantities; actual use depends on the surface and conditions.
