Painters and decorators in Hanwell
Painters and decorators for Hanwell, W7: Victorian terraces around the Broadway, the Brent valley and canal, and the interwar Cuckoo Estate.
Hanwell's mix of homes
Hanwell sits between Ealing and Southall, with the River Brent and Brunel's Wharncliffe Viaduct to the west and the Hanwell flight of locks on the Grand Union Canal to the south-west. Around the Broadway and the clock tower are streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Further north is the Cuckoo Estate, built in the 1930s, and newer flats have appeared along Boston Road. The town has several conservation areas, including Churchfields, Hanwell Village Green, Hanwell Clock Tower, the Cuckoo Estate and part of St Mark's Church and Canal.
Sashes, bays and terraced rooms
A Hanwell terrace usually means a bay-fronted reception room, a narrow hall and stairs, and original or replacement sash windows. Sash windows take longer than their size suggests: each is eased, filled, primed where bare and painted in a durable trim paint, keeping the moving parts clear. As an example, one sash window painted on the inside typically comes to £140–£230. See woodwork painting for how doors, skirting and windows are prepared.
Front walls, railings and outside work
Many terraces have painted front walls, low brick walls with railings or gates, and timber bay windows. Masonry is washed, repaired and painted with breathable masonry paint; exterior timber gets microporous paint so moisture can escape; metal is wire-brushed, treated for rust and primed. Our railing and gate painting page covers the metalwork side.
Where a street has parking controls, parking is agreed before work starts. To get a figure, use the Instant Quote and add photos of the rooms or the front of the house.
Neighbourhoods
Around Hanwell
Boston Manor
This side of Hanwell follows Boston Road south towards Brentford and the Jacobean Boston Manor House, which stands just over the boundary in Hounslow. Along the way are period terraces, twentieth-century houses and recent flat developments such as Hanwell Square.
Churchfields
Churchfields is the conservation area around St Mary's Church and the Churchfields recreation ground, beside the Brent valley and the Wharncliffe Viaduct. Exterior work here should respect the conservation area setting, so colour or material changes are worth checking with the council.
Elthorne
Elthorne was a Hanwell council ward until 2022 and shares its name with Elthorne Park in the south of the town. The surrounding streets are mainly terraced and semi-detached family houses, where decorating is often done a few rooms at a time.
Mayfield
Mayfield is a residential pocket of Hanwell where streets such as Mayfield Gardens are lined with semi-detached family houses. Their straightforward layouts make whole-house decorating easy to plan in stages, starting with the rooms used most.
Deerhurst
Deerhurst is one of Hanwell's smaller residential pockets. Homes in this part of W7 vary from street to street, so photos of the rooms and the front of the house are the quickest route to an accurate price.
Cuckoo Estate
Built between 1933 and 1939 on the site of the Cuckoo Schools, whose old administrative block survives as the Grade II listed Hanwell Community Centre. The estate became a conservation area in 1995, so it is worth checking before changing exterior colours or details.
Questions about Hanwell
Can you paint the outside of a terraced house in Hanwell without scaffolding?
Often, yes. Many two-storey fronts can be reached with ladders or a mobile tower. Where full scaffolding is needed it is priced separately and agreed before work starts.
My front railings are rusty. Can they be painted rather than replaced?
Usually. Loose rust and flaking paint are removed, the metal is treated and primed with a rust-inhibiting primer, then finished in a metal paint. Railings that are badly corroded at the base may need a metalworker first.
Do I need consent to repaint a house on the Cuckoo Estate?
Repainting in the existing colour is normally fine. Because the estate is a conservation area, check with Ealing Council before changing colours, materials or windows.
